While it is fairly common, back pain during pregnancy is not normal. Back pain is a sign of dysfunction and should always be addressed as quickly as possible and managed throughout your pregnancy.
Back pain is very common in pregnancy. It is estimated that between 50% and 80% of women experience some form of back pain during their pregnancy, ranging from mild pain associated with specific activities to acute back pain that can become chronic.
Low back pain usually occurs between the fourth and seventh month of pregnancy, but can begin as early as eight to twelve weeks into your pregnancy. Women with pre-existing low back problems are at higher risk for back pain, and their back pain can occur earlier in the pregnancy.
Conservative management of back pain in pregnancy generally includes a recommendation for therapeutic massage to address the soft tissues such as muscles, tendons and ligaments and gentle chiropractic adjustments to restore motion to joints that have become restricted.
Often just one or two visits to can be very helpful to help minimize or alleviate unwanted back pain during pregnancy.
